Are you someone who only prays on Sundays and only does so at temple? Or are you someone who prefers to stay home and pray in the privacy of your own home? No commute, no lugging around flowers and fruits…
Over 200 people per day visit this website to learn about how to pray to Kali Amman at home. No one seems to search for how to pray to Kali Ma at temple. I believe that prayers at both locations are very important for a Kali devotee and I’d like to share with you the benefits of both and why you should incorporate both into your life the best you can.
The benefits to praying to Kali Ma at home.
Worship at home allows for daily worship. This helps us to connect with the Divine Amman and start each and every day with her blessings. Worship at home invites Amman into our home and blesses the space we live in. It also allows us to express our love to Amman in our own way, through our own procedures and offerings. It allows us to look for Amman within. We all carry her inside us, if we did not, we would not exist. Meditation/jap at home is more focused than it is in most Kali temples because you can designate a space at home where you will not be interrupted or distracted by others chatting away as they sit next to you. (Yes, I’ve had that happen to me while in Temple.) Kali worship in the privacy of your own home allows you to work on jumpstarting your Shakti, something that can feel difficult to do in temple. Ma Kali’s influence in your home helps to negate the influence of other spiritual beings.

The beautiful thing about Kali worship is that you can truly experience your connection to the Divine Amman in multiple ways. Just being in the temple can amplify your vibrations – the Shakti energy inside you. These murtis that have been worshipped thousands of times, carry Amman’s power very strongly. This is because the murti itself is a vessel for her power – a regular home for her power to dwell within every single Sunday. A vessel where hundreds of people have given arti and worshipped with offerings and good intentions. Good intentions are good energy. Place a lot of good energy into an area and then amplify it with Mother’s presence and you have a sacred place overflowing with good energy to manifest your prayers. Each temple is Mother’s house. When you visit temple, you are visiting her. Her presence is there. It’s so strong that when her service is conducted, she is there ready to accept and return to all present, her blessings… and you can literally feel it. The amazing thing about Kali temples, as I know them, is that you can speak with Amman in temple. Her pujaries and marlo pujaries have worked hard to raise their Shakti to the point where they can become the vessel for Mother’s energy and consciousness. Your conversation with Amman does not need to be one sided. You can receive guidance from her through conversation with her. Worship at home alone may leave some to be on the look out for omens and dreams and prayers manifesting as proof that Amman is listening. In temple, she can stand before you and listen and respond to your questions so there is no second guessing. I won’t lie, my Amman is known to speak in what seems like riddles, but this is only because she wants only you to understand the guidance she is giving you. I remember many times in the far past when I would leave baffled and then hit that “Aha!” moment after I’ve returned home to mull over what she said. I know it’s hard to find a Kali temple in many areas, but if you can make it to one, go! Even if it’s just once a month. If you’re in NYC, here are a few temples I personally recommend, listed alphabetically by location: Saat Kali Devi Temple (Bronx), Shri Maha Kali Devi Mandir (Brooklyn), Shri Meenakshi Mariamman Temple (Queens), South Jamaica Maha Kali Temple (Queens) and SMKT (Queens).
How you benefit from praying at home and Kali temple.
As a Kali devotee, you are on a path to returning to the Divine Mother when you leave this existence. That is our soul’s purpose. Learn and experience what we must here and then return to the source. Being a Kali devotee, you have opened yourself up to many many blesses. A huge abundance of blessings. The road is not always easy, but you can make it. To ensure you can receive the blessings from our Amman, it’s important for you to have a sadhana (daily spiritual practice) that you do at home to invite Amman into your home, balance your spiritual energies and open yourself to receiving blessings. Standing in temple amplifies your daily spiritual practice. It increases the strength of your personal shakti energy. Visiting our Amman in her house overwhelms our energy centers with her energy, helping to wash out negative energies and spiritual sicknesses.
When you combine these two practices, you’re on your way to the top of the mountain.
